Excerpt on Chivalry™ Essential Oil Blend from Training CD #67 and #69, Oil Blends for Emotional Health with Gary Young:
Applying Chivalry
I created this blend to help bring back to our consciousness from our ancestors the desire to be chivalrous, so this is something I would like to see you wear when you are out in public and out doing meetings just to remind you to help the little lady across the street, open the door for your wife, open the door for your sweetheart, help her on with her coat. It doesn't matter how long we are married, we are never too old to be a gentleman to our sweetheart.
Just to bring up the respect I have for a man who was a very important figure a few years ago, David O. McKay. In his late 90's prior to his death this man still opened the door for his wife.
He still helped her on with her coat, he still held her hand when they crossed the street. This man demonstrated the role of a gentleman superior to any man I have ever known in my life. He portrayed that everywhere he went in everything he did. It was just the most incredible illustration of chivalry and I have never forgotten those examples he demonstrated. It was an example to the world, not just to the people of that religion, but to the world.
We need to look at people like that regardless of what religious beliefs they have. There are so many good examples everywhere and we need to look at them and we need to look up to those people and emulate them. We need to take those things we learn from them and incorporate them into our lives and become better persons.
Chivalry — Much Needed in Today's World
Valor™ and Joy™ and Harmony™ are in Chivalry™. Why did I create Chivalry? It is something that is being lost and forgotten in our world today.
I have been criticized by some about, why is Gary going into this medieval stuff? People who criticize or people who choose not to understand why someone does something find it is just easier to criticize. I don't do anything in my life without reason for it, because I have a lot of things to do, and I don't do things frivolously.
Jousting – Symbol of Medieval Awakening
First, when I started jousting I didn't know that I was going to like it as much as I did, but I started looking at medieval and the reason I wanted to build a medieval theme in the Park is because during that time period our world started reawakening. It's also when our essential oils returned back to us. That is significant for me. Maybe for anyone else it doesn't matter, but it is for me because that was the reawakening of a whole new generation of people, and consciousness started rising. That's when people really started fighting for their freedom.
But what do we do? We look at the medieval as the era where everybody was out there with sticks and swords killing each other. Why were they killing each other? Why are we in Iraq killing people today? We're not using a lance; so it's okay? No, it's no different. We are fighting for our freedom and as long as there is a human being on this planet we are going to fight for our freedom. I feel the freedom that was fought for during those times was a more honorable freedom than what we are fighting for today, so I see the medieval era as one of the greatest periods of time in our history.
An Era of Chivalry
One of the things that was so prevalent in the medieval era was the chivalry that was taught and practiced by the men. Men would be stretched on the gallows if they were unchivalrous to the ladies or to a squire or to a page; or a young man not showing respect to an elderly person or an adult. And now our young people are taught to sue and curse and slander their parents and do all kinds of things. Our children are actually taught these concepts in the schools today, particularly in America.
We don't have chivalry. We need to bring it back. We need to bring back some of those values that existed during the medieval era.
Take the Good and Build on It
That's why I was building this at the Park, to recreate that which existed that has tremendous value. There is no time from the beginning of Adam until present that you can't find blood if that's what you look for. But if you look through the periods of time, you can see the values and you can see the greatness that was taught in every time period, whether it's Renaissance or the Medieval or the Dark Ages or the Black Ages (or whatever we want to call it).
There is always good; there is always evil, and it exists today more so than it did then. Take that which is good and build upon it and use it to empower who you are and let it create those core principles inside of you that need to be developed and nurtured. Chivalry is one principle that every person in this room needs to build upon and start teaching to their children.
Jacob and the Fruit Bar
Excuse me for bragging about my son, but I can't help it (not because I'm not a proud papa!) I watched this little boy a few months ago. We were in the Wild Oats Health Food Store and he wanted a raspberry fruit bar. He knew where it was, so he went over and got it out of the container and came over and asked, "Daddy, can I have this?" and I said, "Son, you have to pay for it first." I gave him a $5 bill and he walked to the meat counter and said, "Excuse me... (the guy was busy with a customer) Excuse me, excuse me, please.." and the guy didn't pay a lick of attention to him, didn't even acknowledge his presence.
When I saw what happened, I said, "Son, that's not where you pay" and Mary directed him to the cash register. He walked up to the checkout stand there and held up the $5. I was standing back a way watching him and he walked up and held it up and said, "Excuse me, I need pay, I want pay."
The young man who was behind the checkout counter thought he was going to start to cry and he said to me, "I have never seen such a courteous little boy in this store, ever."
He took it a little step further than that. After he exchanged the money he gave him back a couple of dollars and some change and Jacob said, "Thank you." and he turned and came walking through the store and I stepped out where he could see me. He came over and handed me the change and put the dollars in his pocket! You are right! He gets that from his Mother!
Teach Your Children Chivalry
I am spending time on this because it is an issue. It's an issue that we need to be aware of; it's an issue that we need to take charge of; it's an issue that we need to teach our children. We need to emulate chivalry wherever we go, whatever we do. I do most of the time, but I get caught up and get busy and preoccupied mentally, so sometimes I forget. It's really been a challenge for me with the children in this respect because up until Jacob was born I don't think there was ever a time when Mary opened a door without my assistance. It doesn't matter how long you are married, you should treat your sweetheart better than the day you married her.
That's what's called "investing into the future." Open the door, help your sweetheart with her coat on and off, with her shoes, rub her feet at night. Help the little lady across the street. That's why I shared a little bit about the story in China where the little 120 year-old lady was walking up the stairs and I reached to take her hand and got slapped! It doesn't matter! But you still offer, you still take that step forward, you still do the things that are right to do, regardless of how it's accepted and how it's looked at. Sometimes, because of our world and the attitude it's hard for us to remember that, particularly us guys!
Equal Rights, Curse or Blessing?
Women, I have to tell you, you are just as bad, if not worse. Why do I say that? Because you women want equal rights and you are taking a space and a role where you don't really belong in some respects. You women are meant to be cared for by the men. Please, please allow that. There is a place when you can be strong and be who you are, but when there's a man around, allow him, say, "Will you please open the door for me?" You women are going to have to start insisting on chivalry from the men because unfortunately, you have kind of pushed it over the curve a little bit because you want to be recognized, you want to be equal. It's a worldly thing that's happened here, but you women have got to work with us in teaching us to be more chivalrous. I think you get my point!
Set an Example
Is it a problem? Will you all agree? Will you all align with me that this is an area where there is need? Let us, as Young Living people, set the example. As you are out there today and everyday, just try to keep that in mind.
Put a little Chivalry™ on to help you stay focused to that need and be conscious of it. Little by little, it will start to catch on; and I will tell you, I've seen a lot of women who get very fascinated. Just little things like holding the door open for a lady you don't even know at church and all of a sudden, "Oh, wow! Thank you!" Just like they had never experienced that before! So these are just small things, but they are big things in our society. Teach your children to be kind; teach them to respect their elders; teach them to appreciate and give thanks and ask for acknowledgment.

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Don't expect the same results unless you are using Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ Essential Oils and supplements. Also each person is unique and different in chemistry and toxicity levels, as well as emotionally and spiritually, so an oil that is suggested for an issue may not work as well as another. If a change is not apparent within three minutes, try another oil.
