Aromatherapy Diffusers
We found Frankincense at a 150-180 micrograms per ml inhibited 93.5% of the MCF-7 cell line growth. That is not a trivial feat, considering that the cells resist chemotherapy. — Dr. Jaime Matta, Toxicologist and Professor and Department Chair at the Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce Puerto Rico, from his presentation "Toxic Cell Reduction & DNA Repair"
History of Diffusing
The term "aromatherapy" was coined by the French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in the
early 1920s. Gattefossé spent his life devoted to essential oils and their healing properties. However, for more than 6,000 years prior to Gattefossé, aromatherapy had been used by the Egyptians, Romans, and the Greeks. Imhotep, an Egyptian physician, suggested that oils be used for massage, bathing and embalming the dead. Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, used aromatic smoke and vapors to purge Athens of the plague.
Today, much has been theorized regarding the effects of diffusing essential oils, which can be considered similar to the aromatic smoke used by Hippocrates. It has been hypothesized that when essential oils are diffused, they can increase atmospheric oxygen by releasing oxygenating molecules into the air. Not only can essential oils increase oxygen in the atmosphere, they also increase the body's ability to transport oxygen into the cells. The lipid-soluble structure of essential oils allows them to easily penetrate the cell membranes of the nose and enter into the
bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the oils can help transport oxygen and nutrients into the cells.
Diffusing essential oils can have a positive effect on the olfactory system (mechanism of smell) and the limbic system
(center of memory, emotion and motivation). When an essential oil is inhaled through the nose, it is dissolved within the olfactory epithelium (a tissue of layered cells in the nasal cavity) which has more than 40 million cells made of small hairs called cilia also known as olfactory receptors. These receptors receive the micro-fine oil particles carrying them to the mitral cells in the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb then transmits a signal to areas of the brain such as the hippocampus, amygdale, hypothalamus or the olfactory cortex all of which are part of the limbic system.
Emotions, long term memory, and behavior are functions that are managed by the limbic system.
The strong connections people have between scent and memories, emotions, and places are created through this mechanism of smell. Thus, diffusing essential oils is vital in overcoming fear or trauma and is indispensable in building new and positive memories and experiences.
The following information is from The Essential Oils Integrative Medical Guide by Gary Young, ND (purchase book below): Diffused oils alter the structure of molecules that create odors, rather than just masking them. They also increase oxygen availability, produce negative ions, and release natural ozone. Many essential oils such as lemongrass, orange, grapefruit, Eucalyptus globulus, Melaleuca alternifolia, lavender, frankincense, and lemon, along with essential oil blends Thieves and Purification, are extremely effective for eliminating and destroying airborne germs and bacteria.1
A cold-air diffuser is designed to atomize a microfine mist of essential oils into the air, where they can remain suspended for several hours. Unlike aroma lamps or candles which contain harmful chemicals even in the wicks, a diffuser disperses essential oils without heating or burning, which can render the oil therapeutically less beneficial and even create toxic compounds. Burned oils may become carcinogenic. Research shows that cold air diffusing certain oils may:
- Reduce bacteria, fungus, mold, and unpleasant odors.2
- Relax the body, relieve tension, and clear the mind.
- Help with weight management.3
- Improve concentration, alertness, and mental clarity.4
- Stimulate neurotransmitters.
- Stimulate secretion of endorphins.
- Stimulate growth hormone production and receptivity.
- Improve the secretion of IgA antibodies that combat candida.
- Improve digestive function.
- Improve hormonal balance.
- Relieve headaches.5
Start by diffusing oils for 15-20 minutes a day. As you become accustomed to the oils and recognize their effects, you may increase the diffusing time to 1-2 hours per day.
Place the diffuser high in the room so that the oil mist falls through the air and removes the odor-causing substances.
By connecting your diffuser to a timer, you can gain better control over the length and duration of diffusing. For some respiratory conditions, you may diffuse the oils the entire night.
Do not use moe than one blend at a time in a diffuser as this may alter the smell and the therapeutic benefit. However, a single oil may be added to a blend when diffusing.
Always wash the diffuser before using a different oil blend. Use natural soap and warm or hot water.
Other Ways to Diffuse Essential Oils:
- Add essential oils to cedar chips to make your own potpourri.
- Put scented cedar chips in closets or drawers to deodorize them
- Place any conifer essential oil such as spruce, fir (all varieties), cedar, or pine onto each log in the fireplace. As they burn, they will disperse an evergreen smell. This method has no therapeutic benefit, however.
- Put essential oil on cotton balls and place in your car or home air vents.
- Place a bowl of water with a few drops of oil on a wood stove.
- Dampen a cloth, apply essential oils to it and place it near the intake duct of your heating and cooling system.
Research:
1Weber State university, Ogden, UT, 1997; Journal of Essential Oil Research 10, 517-523 (Sept/Oct 1998) — one analysis shows a 90 percent reduction in the number of gram positive Mirococcus luteus organisms after diffusing Thieves for 12 minutes. After 20 minutes of diffusing, the kill-rate jumped to 99.3 percent. Another study against the gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a kill-rate of 99.96 percent after just 12 minutes of diffusing.
2Screening for Inhibitory Activity of Essential Oils on Selected Bacteria, Fungi and Viruses; Weber State University, Ogden, UT; Journal of Essential Oil Research — 45 essential oils were tested for their inhibitory effect against bacteria, yeast, molds and two bacteriophage. Of the oils tested, all oils showed inhibition compared to controls. Cinnamon bark and tea tree essential oils showed an inhibitory effect against all the test organisms and phage. Other oils with broad range of inhibition included lemongrass, mountain savory, Roman chamomile, rosewood and spearmint.
3Alan Hirsch, MD, researched peppermint's stimulation of the brain's satiety center (ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus) to curb appetite. When inhaled, it improves/restores sense of taste by stimulating the trigemial nerve.
4Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati found that inhaling peppermint oil increased mental accuracy by 28 percent.
5University of Kiel researchers found that peppermint blocked headache pain in a double-blind palcebo-controlled cross-over study.

Young Living's Essential Oil Diffuser gives you the benefit of diffusing essential oils throughout your home or office. Diffusing is a simple and effective way to use essential oils. With Young Living's innovative air pump, oils are dispersed in a micro-fine vapor, allowing them to remain suspended in the air for extended periods of time. The diffuser disperses the oils without heating them so they retain their therapeutic benefits. When inhaled, the oils are easily absorbed through the lungs. Depending on the oil used, diffusing can cleanse the air of odor, calm overactive children, and support respiration.* Note: The pump is not compliant with EU voltage. They are designed for use with 120 volts. (Please contact the UK office for a pump that is EU compatible.)
How to Use:
Using the Diffuser ~ The Young Living Diffuser consists of an air pump, an oil well base, and a glass nebulizer connected by a flexible air tube. Attached to the air tube is a flow control valve. You can set the pump on the floor or under a table so that it is out of sight. For your convenience, you can attach the pump to an appliance timer so it will turn on and off automatically.
Assembly ~ Carefully remove the parts from the packaging. Connect one end of the clear plastic tube to the air pump outlet and the other end to the air inlet of the well. Place the glass nebulizer over the jet.
Operating Instructions ~ Pour 15 to 20 drops of oil directly into the well approximately one-quarter inch deep. You only need enough oil for the mist to start coming through the top of the nebulizer. You may wish to place the bottle of essential oil upside down in the well located next to the nebulizer. Be sure that the plastic orifice (drop reducer) is still in the bottle opening. Turn the knob on the flow control valve.
How much oil will be used? ~ Thicker oils will diffuse more slowly than thinner ones. You can leave a bottle of thicker oils upside down on the well because it diffuses slowly. Thinner oils should be poured directly into the well because they diffuse quickly. Note: Never add water to oils or thin them with another substance. This could clog the jet and possibly alter the oil's effects.
Changing Oils ~ You can change from a single oil to a blend or from a blend to a single. Simply allow the first oil to be completely diffused. If there is too much oil left to diffuse, use the enclosed eyedropper to return it to its bottle.
Mixing Oils ~ Avoid mixing two or more blends, as this may change the desired results. A single oil may be added to a blend, or two single oils may be mixed together and diffused. Avoid using vegetable oils such a V-6 Mixing Oil, massage oils, or other vegetable-based oils in your diffuser. Oils of this thickness may clog the diffuser.
Cleaning the Diffuser ~ Disconnect the plastic tubing from the air outlet on the well. Remove the glass nebulizer and clean it with soapy water or rubbing alcohol. Seal both ends of the nebulizer and shake. Rinse with water or alcohol. Let dry completely. Use a blow dryer on low heat for quicker drying. Thoroughly clean the inside of the well with rubbing alcohol or soapy water.
How long should a diffuser be used? ~ In the home, a diffuser may be used for any length of time-anywhere from 5 minutes to continuous use. Short periods of 5 to 15 minutes are recommended for anyone who is experiencing oils for the first time. In large offices or commercial areas, the diffuser should be used for 15 to 30 minutes at a time until everyone in the area becomes acquainted with the oils. After that point, it may run continuously.
Cautions ~ The glass nebulizer should always be placed over the jet before starting the diffuser. Low grade oils or "perfume essences" may clog the air jet. The diffuser should be placed on a steady surface that is protected in case spills occur.
Troubleshooting ~ When a diffuser is functioning properly, you can see oil being projected through the glass nebulizer as it turns into a mist. If this is not happening, check the following: No air output. Be sure the pump is plugged into an active electrical socket and the tubing is properly attached. Check to make sure that the knob on the control valve is turned. Make sure there is oil in the well or in the bottle.
Ingredients: The Complete Diffuser includes: The Well (with jet), a Pump, a Glass Nebulizer, an Oil Dropper, and Tubing. NOTE: The well and jet is one unit. Removing the jet will render the diffuser inoperable. Item 3809, the jet replacement, is not intended as a replacement for the jet in this diffuser type.
