The Essence of the Season™ Collection

Essential oils are the regenerating and oxygenating immune defense properties of plants. Their oxygenating molecules effectively transport nutrients and a myriad of other powerful chemical constituents to the cells, bringing life to the plants, destroying infections, staving off infection, aiding in growth, and stimulating healing. They are to plants what blood is to the human body and much, much more. ~ D. Gary Young

This Collection will lift your spirit while refreshing and purifying the air. This exquisite collection possesses rich, exotic fragrances that relate directly to the holiday season. The essential oils can be diffused in the home while the gum resins can be used as potpourri or in the fireplace. Personally, I love to use the blend Christmas Spirit in my cranberry relish!

History Behind the Oils: The spirit of Christmas harkens back to an era when the sacred anointing and incense oils of frankincense and myrrh were treasured by kings and sovereigns and were more highly esteemed than gold.

Two millennia ago, three Magi kings appeared in Jerusalem from the East, resolutely pursuing a shining eastern star, a radiant celestial light that seemed to hover perpetually before them. At last, they found themselves in the peasant village of Bethlehem. There they found Mary and Joseph at the inn with the Chirst child held fondly in his mother's arms. Immediately, they dropped to their knees and presented the child with the most precious gifts known to the ancient world: frankincense, gold and myrrh.

In the spirit of Christmas, this kit includes the gum resins and essential oils of frankincense, myrrh and the essential oil blend of Christmas Spirit. These oils and gum resins are not only emblems of the past but also of the future and symbols of the age-old quest for protection and good health.

The Miracle of Frankiincnese and Myrrh
Frankincense originates from a legendary tree native to Southern Arabia &mndash; and one whose scrubby and unpretentious appearance camouflaged the oily treasure hidden in its bark. Called "perfume of the Gods" by the ancient Egyptians, both the frankincense gum and essential oil were coveted by successive generations of Greeks, Romans and Arabians and were used to "treat every conceivable ill from gout to a 'broken head'." The highly regarded Roman historian, Pliny the Elder, gave an account of the phenomenally tight security that surrounded the processing of Frankincense: "...No vigilance is sufficient to guard the factories... before the workers are allowed to leave the premises they have to take off all their clothes." (National Geographic, October 1985). Myrrh, a darker, richer, earthier aromatic, was used to perfume the royal mummeries of Egypt and was the principal ingredient in the sacred anointing oil of the Jews. As both an incense and an oil, myrrh was prized by the ancients as medicine.

The Difference Between Gums and Resins
Gums are water soluble while resins are not. Gum resins, like Frankincense and Myrrh, are an intricate blend of oil-based resins and water-based gums, possessing properties common to both gums and resins.

How Are Gums and Resins Produced?
Scrapes, incisions or grooves are carved into the trunk of the frankincense tree and the large branches of the myrrh shrub. In response to the wound, the plant produces a thick, protectant gum resin, rich in microbial chemicals, that coats the area and prevents the entrance of pathogenic microorganisms. The gum resin is collected in troughs or buckets and allowed to harden into small, yellow-brown glass-like beads. Only a few tons of raw frankincense gum are produced each year.

How Were Gum and Resins Used? Historically resins were either distilled for their essential oil content or burned as incense. Small fragments of hard resin were placed in small dishes and cooked or burned over candles. Their fragrance was said to be heavenly, exquisite and intoxicatingly beautiful, reminiscent of pine forests and prayerworn alters of forgotten shrines.
